Iran The World Bank is planning to lend $70 million to the Tehran Municipality for environmental protection. Already a non-reimbursable grant of $1 million has been earmarked for research and $1 million has been earmarked for research and development on environmental issues.
The Bank is ready to participate in the modernization of the sewage system, and to implement measures to safeguard the environment and transportation. The Bank also insists on reforming the financial auditing systems and designing a self-sustaining financial mechanism for the city.
The World Bank has also granted $400,000 for environment reservation and infrastructural development. It plans to distribute up to $80 million for implementing projects in the above mentioned fields over a four year period beginning in the second half 2003.
In addition to the World Bank loans, Iran is planning to take advantage of the Bank's affiliated companies including the International Finance Cooperation (IFC) which provides facilities to the private sector, and MIGA (Multilateral Investments Guarantee Agency) which guarantees investments of member countries in each other.
