East West Debt, solving defaulted trade and bank debt

East-West Debt march 2003 news, update : AZERBAIJAN

Azerbaijan
Since its accession to the International Monetary Fund in 1992, Azerbaijan has received from this organization loans worth $458 million. All signed loans totaled $562 million including the last $100 million worth program for poverty reduction and economic development, which was signed in 2001.

Two tranches, worth about $10 million each, have been allocated since that time. The third tranche was on the agenda. However, the IMF suspended the Poverty Reduction and Growth Facility program. This means that further tranches from the $100 million loan will not be allocated to Azerbaijan.

The IMF regrets that Azerbaijan wrongfully utilized funds obtained from oil sales. It also criticizes a new taxation policy introduced by the Azerbaijan government.
